RECYCLED COPPER | KILN-FIRED GLASS ENAMEL | TITANIUM EAR WIRE
Add a little splash of color to your life!
About the Artist Selena Karmel:After spending time in the quaint New England fishing village of Stonington, Maine, I became inspired to create beautiful jewelry. The artists community blended in with the working docks of the fisherman and the beauty of nature ever present in those jagged rocky coastlines. Nature is the best inspiration!
My process is one of exploring and having fun while working with my hands to create something that will have a journey of their own.The enameling process is similar to painting, watching the colors come to life after firing in the kiln is magical. The bright colorful pop of enamel is eye-catching, playful and modern in a contemporary style. The earrings I create are perfect for any wardrobe, they are lightweight simple for the everyday minimalist, yet elegant for that special night-out.To create my earrings, the shape is hand-cut from recycled copper, carefully cleaned and prepared in order to accept the enamel. Multiple layers of enamel (which is finely powdered glass) are applied, first to the back and then the front of the piece. Each application must be fired in a 1500° kiln and then cleaned before the next layer can be added. This firing process is repeated multiple times to achieve the desired end result. The ear wires are hand formed as well and my choice of wire is pure titanium, which is hypoallergenic, surgical grade and ideal for those with sensitive skin! It is also corrosion resistant, meaning it will hold its shine and color. The earrings are handcrafted and since each kiln firing produces unique results, the earrings are one-of-a-kind wearable art!
